Is OKX safe
and legit?
Answering the three things new users worry about with public information: are funds backed, is it allowed where you live, and how to avoid scams.
Proof of Reserves: are the funds really there?
The key question for any exchange is whether it holds enough assets to cover customer balances. OKX has published monthly Proof of Reserves since 2022:
- reserve ratios for major assets, typically above 100%;
- a Merkle-tree tool to verify that your own balance is included;
- public on-chain wallet addresses anyone can check in a block explorer.
It doesn’t remove all risk, but it’s far more transparent than exchanges that publish nothing.
Regulation and licences
OKX has obtained licences or registrations in multiple jurisdictions, such as authorisation under the EU’s MiCA framework and a licence from Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA). The list changes over time — check the compliance and licences information on okx.com for the current status.
Is OKX legal where you live?
- Where a regulatory framework exists (the EU, the UAE and others), licensed platforms can legally serve residents.
- OKX’s Terms of Service list countries and regions where it does not provide services.
- US residents are served by OKX US, a separate platform with its own products and promotions.
Read the OKX Terms of Service and follow your local laws before signing up. This site only summarises public information and does not offer ways around regional restrictions.
Five scams new users run into
- Fake support: “your account is frozen — send funds to verify” or “give us your code”.
- Fake apps and sites: search ads and short links to look-alike domains that steal logins.
- “Trading mentors” / pig-butchering: small early wins, then pressure to deposit big on a “private platform” you can’t withdraw from.
- Guaranteed returns: “1% a day” or “principal protected” — never real.
- Airdrop phishing: “claim” links that ask you to approve a contract that drains your wallet.
Five-minute security setup
- Enable an authenticator app (2FA) and store the backup key offline.
- Set an anti-phishing code to recognise genuine emails.
- Turn on the withdrawal address whitelist.
- Use a unique password and review logged-in devices regularly.
- Move long-term holdings to a wallet you control — never share your seed phrase.

Safety
FAQ.
01Is OKX a legitimate exchange?
OKX is one of the largest crypto exchanges in the world. It launched as OKEx in 2017 and holds licences or registrations in several jurisdictions, including the EU and Dubai — see the OKX website for the current list.
02Could OKX collapse or run off with funds?
No platform can be guaranteed 100%. OKX’s monthly Proof of Reserves lets you check that user balances are fully backed, which is the key solvency signal. Keep long-term holdings in a wallet you control and don’t keep everything on one exchange.
03Is OKX legal in my country?
It depends on where you live. OKX does not serve certain countries and regions, and US residents are served by a separate OKX US platform with different products. Read the OKX Terms of Service and follow local laws.
04How do I check OKX Proof of Reserves?
Search “Proof of Reserves” on okx.com to see reserve ratios for major assets, and log in to verify your own balance with the Merkle-tree tool.
05Someone claiming to be OKX support messaged me. What should I do?
OKX support won’t DM you first or ask for your password, 2FA codes or seed phrase. Check any account on the official OKX verification page; if you can’t verify it, treat it as a scam.
06My account was compromised. What now?
Contact OKX live chat immediately to freeze the account, change your OKX and email passwords, reset 2FA, and check your phone for unfamiliar apps.
